Strategy did not buy any bitcoin last week. That alone is worth noting, because the company has spent much of the past year adding to its holdings on a regular basis. Instead, it repurchased $176 million of its preferred stock, according to its latest regulatory filing. The company also expanded its buyback program for STRC preferred shares. MSTR shares traded lower after the announcement.
A Shift in the Playbook
The buyback marks a change in how the firm is using its capital. For years, Strategy treated bitcoin accumulation as its main financial move. A week without purchases is not unusual on its own, and the company has paused before. Still, pairing a $176 million preferred repurchase with a pause in bitcoin buying suggests management is paying closer attention to its capital structure right now.
Technicals Show a Split Picture
Strategy stock closed at 136.52 on September 8, below an intraday high of 139.31. The daily chart still looks constructive. Price sits above the 20-day EMA at 122.02 and the 50-day EMA at 115.29, and the daily RSI of 61.37 is above the midline without reaching overbought territory. The daily MACD remains positive.
But the 200-day EMA at 158.41 is far overhead. So this looks more like a recovery attempt inside a larger downtrend than a confirmed reversal.
The hourly chart is less encouraging. The hourly MACD line has crossed below its signal, a bearish reading, and price is trading under its 20-period EMA. Momentum on that timeframe has stalled. When the daily and hourly views disagree like this, the shorter timeframe often leads until buyers prove otherwise.
Broader Market Backdrop
Pressure came from more than one direction. The S&P 500 and the Dow slipped at the open as traders priced in higher Fed rate expectations. Brent crude moved toward $100 a barrel after Iran threatened Gulf energy infrastructure. And bitcoin was rejected near $82,000, which pulled crypto-linked equities down together. COIN and CRCL fell alongside MSTR. Ethereum outperformed bitcoin over the same stretch, though that did little for Strategy shares.
Levels to Watch
For bulls, Strategy needs to reclaim the hourly EMA20 at 137.52 and the daily pivot at 137.07. A clean push through 138.76 would suggest the daily uptrend is reasserting itself, opening a path toward the upper Bollinger band near 151.89 over time.
For bears, a break below 135.97 would be the first warning. Losing the daily support at 134.83 would undercut the near-term bullish case. Below the hourly EMA50 at 133.23, the daily trend would face real pressure.
I would not read too much into a single week of no bitcoin purchases. But the buyback does hint that the company is weighing its capital priorities, not just its bitcoin stack. This article is informational only and is not financial advice.
