Algorand Appoints William Herkelrath CEO to Lead Quantum Readiness Push

Leadership change at Algorand Foundation

The Algorand Foundation has named William Herkelrath as its chief executive officer. He formally took over on Aug. 31, succeeding Staci Warden after almost five years in the role. The Delaware-based organization announced the change in a Wednesday press release.

Herkelrath most recently co-founded K3 Labs, an artificial intelligence automation platform. Before that, he held leadership positions at Chainlink, a blockchain data provider, and Curv, a crypto custody firm. His background mixes infrastructure, data, and custody, which may fit Algorand’s push into institutional business.

Quantum readiness and Algorand’s pitch

Algorand is a proof-of-stake blockchain used for payments, asset tokenization, and digital identity. It was founded by Silvio Micali, a cryptographer and MIT professor. The network has tried to stand out by preparing for quantum computing threats earlier than many peers.

Post-quantum cryptography aims to protect systems from attacks by quantum computers powerful enough to break widely used encryption. Such machines are not yet seen as an immediate threat to major blockchains. Still, developers have started preparing for the possibility.

Algorand says post-quantum accounts are already live in production. The network uses Falcon-1024, a lattice-based signature system, and support for post-quantum signatures was included in its v42 consensus upgrade. Other chains, including Ethereum, Solana, and Bitcoin, are researching or proposing quantum-resistant signatures and ways for users to migrate assets away from cryptography that could become vulnerable.

Herkelrath said Algorand set out to build a quantum resilient world years before most of the industry saw it as a real threat. He added that post-quantum accounts on Algorand are running in production rather than sitting on a roadmap. As institutions start to see value in post-quantum readiness, he wants to turn that preparation into a standard others measure against.

Board changes and next steps

The foundation also announced board changes. Herkelrath and Alex Fowler, chief strategy officer at Nexus Laboratories, are joining. Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier are departing.

Algorand has previously shared a roadmap to achieve quantum resistance by 2028. The CEO change puts a former Chainlink and Curv executive at the helm as the organization tries to grow institutional use and keep its quantum message in front of customers. Whether that message turns into adoption is a different question. For now, Algorand is betting that early preparation matters.
