Most US voters doubt Trump on crypto regulation

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) played a notable role in the November 2024 US presidential election. Back then, support for crypto seemed to nudge some voters toward Donald Trump, helping him win. Polls at the time suggested this alignment was real. But things have shifted.

Voter trust erodes on crypto regulation

Today, a majority of US voters don’t trust the Trump administration when it comes to overseeing cryptocurrency. As the midterm elections approach, crypto assets haven’t become the hot-button issue some expected. CoinDesk reports that in a poll of 1,000 registered voters, only 1% listed crypto as a key issue for the 2026 midterms.

Instead, voters care more about basic costs. The top concern is the cost of living, cited by 36% of participants. Next comes employment and the economy (13%), followed by social security and health insurance (11%). That’s a long way from crypto.

Government trust is low

A solid 62% of those polled don’t think the government can properly regulate the crypto industry. That’s a pretty broad skepticism. But it’s not a complete dismissal. About 40% said they would consider voting for a candidate whose views on crypto assets match their own. So it’s still a factor for some.

Party perceptions shift slightly

When asked about party views, 47% of participants believed the Republican Party has a more positive stance on crypto. Only 14% said the same about the Democratic Party. However, the narrative changes when it comes to managing policy. In this latest poll, the Democratic Party (27%) edged slightly ahead of the Republican Party (25%) on who would better handle cryptocurrency regulation. But notably, around 40% of people said they don’t trust either party on this issue.

Conflict of interest concerns

Finally, a large majority—73%—oppose senior public officials being involved in cryptocurrency-related projects. This reflects worries about conflicts of interest and whether regulators can stay independent.
